Duse made Grand Hotel et de Milan her Milanese home for her frequent rendezvous with the great writer Gabriele D'Annunzio. They were romantically involved as well as collaborating professionally. D'Annunzio wrote four comedies dedicated ‘to the greatest actress of all time’. She performed these works in many countries and was also an acclaimed interpreter of the plays of Henrik Ibsen.
